Sam Collins has a passion for athletics.
A regular attendee of fitness classes, he enjoys staying active and exercising.
Collins also has Down syndrome, but it will not slow him down this Saturday at the fifth annual 5k race by The Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
The Arc serves area residents with disabilities, providing programs, support and advocacy for those with specials. It works with people like Collins and his family to improve their quality of life.
The Collins family — an athletic bunch — have formed the team “Sam’s Superstars” to raise money and run in this weekend’s race. Proceeds from the event go toward expanded offerings at The Arc for community members of all ages with disabilities.
A 1-mile fun run starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Williamsburg Landing, with the 5k stepping off at 9 a.m.
There will be an award ceremony afterward for winners in each age group and top fundraising teams, along with family activities, food, music and other prizes.
Online registration closes 24 hours before the race, with race-day signups starting at 7:30 a.m. Racers can pick up packets early Thursday and Friday at William A. Doig Health Club and Spa at Williamsburg Landing.
The cost is $30, with children under age 10 free to participate.

Watermen’s Museum to Hold First Folk Festival
A folk festival comes to the Watermen’s Museum this weekend.
At least 10 local musicians and bands will perform at Sunday’s event, which is slated to be the first of an annual tradition. Tunes will be outdoors on three stages, all along the shores of the York River.
Performers include the LCV Project, Carson Hudson, Shanty Grass, Fiddler’s Green, Cindy Warner and Friends, Janie Meneely, Dorian and Stephanie Cleveland, Frank Gleason, and Mingo and the Crew of the Pequad.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is free to guests.
