NetworkPeninsula to Offer Nonprofit Board Training in October

network williamsburgNetworkPeninsula is preparing for its next class geared to training community members to serve on nonprofit boards.

The one-day course is designed for residents looking to join a board or those who already have a position and want to better understand their role.

NetworkPeninsula, a nonprofit that provides education and connection to area charities, first offered the class in 2010. Since then, 93 people have completed the Nonprofit Board Training.

“Oftentimes, people are invited to serve on a Board without fully understanding or being made aware of the responsibilities it entails,” said Karen Dutro, NetworkPeninsula’s executive director, in a news release.

The course will cover topics that include financial oversight, role of the board in fundraising, recruitment, responsibilities and rewards. Graduates will also have access to additional resources and an online forum to share ideas and discuss challenges, as well as be added to an online database of trained board prospects that can be seen by local nonprofits.

Lisa Freeman will teach the class. A full-time consultant with more than 30 years in the nonprofit sector, Freeman has taught the Nonprofit Board Training program since 2009.

The class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Virginia Company Bank in Newport News. The cost is $150, with discounts available for NetworkPeninsula members.
