Aktion Club Donates to Give Play to Children with Cancer
An organization that brings together members of the Arc of Greater Williamsburg, which serves those with intellectual disabilities, and the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg has raised $400 to help bring joy to sick children.
The Aktion Club is made up of Arc clients with the nonprofits staff and Kiwanis Club members as advisers.
The group recently hosted a car wash at C&F Bank. They chose to give the proceeds to Roc Solid Foundation, which sponsors children who are battling cancer or in remission, providing them with a playground or playhouse built by volunteers.
Bridles and Bow Ties Event Raises Funds for Therapeutic Horseback Riding
A sold-out event in May supported riding lessons and scholarships for Dream Catchers at the Cori Sikich Therapeutic Riding Center. The event, the nonprofit’s major fundraising affair, had 35o attendees.
The seventh annual Bridles and Bow Ties exceeded the $10,000 challenge grant match for Dream Rider Scholarships for families in need. The $10,000 in challenge money was donated by John and Susan Sikich.
Guests saw the therapeutic horsemanship in action during a cocktail hour, followed by a dinner from The Catering Company and live auction.
Kingsmill Yacht Club Holds Boating Safety Classes
This spring the Kingsmill Yacht Club opened its first Virginia Safe Boaters Class up to the public for the first time. Led by David Chin, the KYC training director, the class came after a two-week “Dry Sailing” program taught the month before.
The program gave students the chance to obtain a Virginia Safe Boater Card. More than 20 people participated, from children to retirees, and all passed their exams with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 67.

Children, Seniors Mark Fourth of July with Patriotism
In honor of the Fourth of July, local organizations hosted events to celebrate the nation’s independence.
The Goddard School, a preschool in Yorktown, had a ceremony on the morning of July 3. The preschool and pre-K students recited the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by guest Alexis Williams singing the National Anthem and a parade around the school.
The event all honored Sr. Master Sgt. Tony Sayago (U.S. Air Force), Lt. Col. John Przbylski (U.S. Army), and Sgt.Bobby Edwards (U.S. Air Force), three members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 824 based in Yorktown.
Residents and staff at Consulate Health Care’s Envoy of Williamsburg also celebrated the holiday with a visit from the local Veterans of Foreign Wards group. Last weekend, the veterans helped residents decorate their wheelchairs and walkers in red, white and blue.
