What You’ll Do: May 29-June 1

W.Y.D2Whether you’re pounding the pavement or adopting a furry friend, there are many ways to support area causes this weekend. As we transition into June, you will also have the chance to explore the past — going back centuries or millennia.

Music and Art

This Century Art Gallery will host their May Weekend Gallery Show, which kicks off with a free reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday to meet the artists. Their work, on display throughout the weekend, includes carved pottery, collages, photography, paper maché and other mediums. Watch them work from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Absolute Acoustic will perform at Cogan’s Pub on Saturday night. The duo playing live acoustic rock will start at 8 p.m.

Guitarist Louis Vangieri will play to visitors over lunch at the William & Mary Bookstore on Sunday afternoon. Playing a blend of acoustic covers and original works, the music starts at 1 p.m.

Support a Cause

Race for education and the nation’s veterans with Run for the Dream, which includes three races for all ages this weekend. The 8k run/walk starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, followed by a Kids Fun Run at 10 a.m., and there is a half marathon starting at 7 a.m. Sunday. Courses wind through Colonial Williamsburg, the College of William & Mary and along the James River. See the Hometown section to learn about the groups benefitting from the event.

Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, a nonprofit and all-volunteer organization, is hosting an adoption day Saturday at Petco in Settler’s Market. The group will be accepting applications for prospective adopters, fosters and volunteers, as well as collecting donations. The event starts at noon.

At 4 p.m. Saturday at Norge Hall, the Norge Depot Association is holding a fundraising dinner. Proceeds will go to buying a caboose to display in front of the Norge Depot on Croaker Road.

The York Ruritan Club will be selling barbeque on Saturday next to the Western Auto in Grafton. The club will also be collecting fishing rods, reels and tackle to benefit residents at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Eat or leave some grub from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Go Back in Time

Experience a presentation of biblical culture on Saturday, with the Jerusalem Marketplace at Wellspring United Methodist Church. Starting at 4 p.m., the event seeks to transport guests to Jerusalem in the year 33 A.D., with shops and trades, live animals, plays and puppets and speakers.

Sunday starts a new theme month at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center, which will examine “Fashion in Colonial Virginia.” Visitors to the sites will get a hands-on experience of how cloth was produced and ways clothing was stitched, dyed and accessorized. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
