They run, kick, swing and score, but this week the athletes at the College of William & Mary are finding a way to give back to their community.
The Tribe’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee is competing in an annual food drive by the Colonial Athletics Association. SAAC works to create a positive environment for student-athletes, and students involved serve as a connection between the school and the national level of the CAA.
William & Mary’s SAAC will be collecting nonperishable food items throughout the week at a variety of events and locations. They hope to bring both the Williamsburg and Tribe communities together to combat hunger.
The project will benefit the food pantries at FISH and Grove Christian Outreach Center. These two organizations rely almost exclusively on volunteer support to serve underprivileged people and communities in the area.
From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, donors can drop off goods at the Phi Beta Kappa Hall parking lot off Jamestown Road.
There will be additional food boxes to collect contributions at:
- Women’s Lacrosse, 3 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Family Stadium
- Men’s Golf, all day Tuesday at the Rivers Course at Kingsmill
- Baseball, 7 p.m. Friday at Plumeri Park
- Women’s Tennis, 3 p.m. Friday at the Millie West Tennis Courts
- Men’s Tennis, 4 p.m. Saturday at the Millie West Tennis Courts
- Women’s Tennis, 11 a.m. next Sunday at the Millie West Tennis Courts
Monetary donations can be online, where the Tribe has set a goal of $1,000. Through the YouGiveGoods website, the public can select the food items to purchase, which the company will deliver to the designated food pantries.

The online element opens Tuesday and runs through March 31.
Tribe athletics has a long history of community services. The William & Mary men’s gymnastics team completed its sixth annual drive to benefit FISH in January, with a total collection of 2,953 pounds of canned goods.
