Five York County students were recognized at the Feb. 24 board meeting for their outstanding contributions to their schools and to the community. Fifth-grade students at Walsingham Academy made history come alive as they molded themselves into figures from a wax museum. See a photo slideshow of the highlights below.
YCSD Seniors of the Month
Each month, the York County School Division recognizes teens from each of the county’s high schools who have shown exceptional merit in academic performance and school involvement to receive the Senior of the Month Award. The February Seniors of the Month are:
Austin Hehir from Tabb High
Hehir boasts membership in five honor societies: Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish and English — where he serves as treasurer — Science and the National Honor Society. In addition to his Advanced Placement coursework, Hehir is a talented athlete. He has played four years of football – three of the of them at the varsity level – as well as four years of varsity lacrosse and three of varsity ice hockey.
Outside the walls of Tabb, Hehir is active in his church, volunteering with his Youth Retreat team, in a soup kitchen and working the Haunted Trail and the Catholic Heart Work Camp.
Josephine Miller from Grafton High
The stage is home for Miller, who is active in Grafton’s theater productions and its Thespian Honor Society. She sings with choir and was selected for All-State Honors Chorus, plays tenor saxophone in the school jazz ensemble and is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Miller gives back by volunteering at Center Stage Academy, and hopes to pursue vocal performance in college.
When she is not performing, Miller – who goes by “Josie” – is involved with National Honor Society, Interact Club, French Honor Society and the African-American History Club.
Edward Schuler from Bruton High
Schuler attends the Regional Governor’s School for Science, Technology and Engineering, and as a senior was accepted into the NASA HUNCH (High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware) program at the Governor’s school, where he was a leader of the communications team.
While maintaining a 4.46 GPA, Schuler has served the community as a leader of the St. Olaf Adult and Youth Mass Classes and the Youth Confirmation Retreat Team. He has also volunteered at the Heritage Humane Society and participates in the Farmville Missions Trip to rebuild homes for individuals in need.
Elizabeth Watt from York High
A leader both on and off the playing field, Watt holds officer positions in National Honor Society, Student Council Association and Art Club, and was nominated captain of her field hockey team. She is also a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the French National Honor Society.
In addition to her active involvement with her church, Watt is passionate about theater and playwriting, and hopes to pursue the art after high school.
Walsingham Students Create “Wax” Museum
Students from Gabby Lynch and Mary Beth Hughes’s fifth-grade classes at Walsingham Academy embodied historical icons on Thursday, presenting a living museum exhibition in the lower school gymnasium.
Each student researched a historical figure, dressed in costume and memorized a short speech. In the museum, the students stood still as statues and, when prompted by a museum visitor, recited their speeches.
