Guests to William and Mary’s Phi Beta Kappa Hall can enjoy the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, joined by Russian guitarist Artyom Dervoed on the lesser-loved string instrument, at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Dervoed is the recent winner of the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Competition, named for VSO’s musical director. The contest was established in 2004 as the world’s first concerto competition for classical guitarists with accompaniment by a full symphony orchestra.
Thursday will mark Dervoed’s VSO debut with a performances of Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez.” The piece is inspired by Rodrigo’s Spanish homeland and hearkens to dancing and singing in the warm climate and gardens of Aranjuez, a city 30 miles south of Madrid.

Also on the program are Beethoven’s “Leonore” Overture No. 3 and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1.
