To honor the nation’s presidents, all national parks will offer free admission during Presidents Day weekend.
In the Historic Triangle, that applies to Colonial National Historical Park, which includes Yorktown Battlefield, Historic Jamestowne and the Colonial Parkway. Admission will be free to those sites from Feb. 15 to 17.
This initiative by the National Park Service celebrates the connection between American leaders and the country’s parks.
“Every U.S. president has visited, resided in, or been honored in a national park,” said National Park Service director Jonathan B. Jarvis in a news release.
Jarvis said sites of significance to presidents provide insight into the characters of the men who governed the county.
“Visit a national park and walk in their footsteps. See where they lived and learned, relaxed and recharged, experienced triumphs and tribulations,” he said.
Adult admission, which applies to those aged 16 or older, to Yorktown Battlefield is normally $7. Adult admission to Historic Jamestowne is typically $14. The passes are good for one week, with discounts available for Preservation Virginia members.
The Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center and the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All park grounds close at sunset.
In addition to the 401 national parks, the National Park Service helps communities preserve other presidential sites through programs such as the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks.
