Hometown: Sleighbell 5k Benefits Youth Activities

sleigbell 5k2013Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is sponsoring and hosting this weekend’s chilly run/walk event.

A one-mile fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by the 5k at 10 a.m. The 5k course, mostly flat, winds around the hospital campus and through a small neighborhood.

Proceeds from the Sleighbell 5k will benefit local youth in after-school activities provided by the WJCC School Health Initiative Program (SHIP) and the R.F. Wilkinson YMCA. The SHIP Program is funded by the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, which recently awarded nearly $1 million in grants.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three men and women with the best times running, walking, in the masters category (40 or older) and within each age group. The awards ceremony starts at 11:15 a.m.

Early registration has closed but spots may still be available on race day, with registration and packet pick-up beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $35 for the 5k, and free for those 70 years old or older. The fun run is free as well (but $10 for a t-shirt, upon availability).

For more information, contact race director Jim Elder at 253-0277.
