Hometown: Register for Color the Town 5k by Monday

color the townThose looking for a chance to explore new town, get some exercise and a little color will have their opportunity soon at the upcoming Sept. 29 Color the Town 5k, which will close online registration Wednesday.

When runners take to the course that winds through New Town, they will find stations set up alongside where volunteers will sling different colors of powder on the brand new, white T-shirts provided at the race.

Michael Barder of Waterside Agency, the Lanexa-based company organizing the event, said the powder is a mixture of food coloring and corn starch – harmless unless you’re allergic to either of those things.

Registration is $40, which gets runners a white T-shirt, a grab bag of goodies and a bag of color of their own. Barder said the start and finish lines are on Discovery Boulevard and the route takes runners through much of New Town. This year is the inaugural run and so far, Barder said, it’s been a success.

“We’re excited about the response we’ve seen from the community,” he said. “We’re looking forward to having a great event and showing people a new side of New Town.”

While runners finish the race, local artist Carolee Vitaletti will be in the after party area finishing a painting of a photo of a dog from the Heritage Humane Society that will be auctioned. The proceeds from the auction will go to the humane society, which will also be on-site with a few of their animals, along with the band Billy Joe Trio.

Barder said those who can’t make the Sept. 23 registration deadline can register on-site, the day of race. With heavy sponsorship from Yankee Candle, 20 percent of the proceeds from the event will go toward the Heritage Humane Society.
