The James City County Police Department is accepting applications for the 37th Citizens Police Academy; applications are due Aug. 15. Citizens Police Academy Applications Available
Citizens who want to learn about the James City County Police Department’s daily operations can apply to be part of the 37th Citizens Police Academy.
The Citizens Police Academy is a free 15-session program beginning Sept. 4. Sessions cover polygraphs, RADAR, traffic stops, DUI enforcement, firearms, crime scene investigation and more.
Classes are typically held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way. The class will meet one Saturday for a session at the county’s firing range.
The academy is open to adults who live or work in the county; applicants must apply and submit to a criminal background check before they may be admitted.

Voter Registration Training for Third Party Voters
Any individual or group wanting to obtain 25 or more voter registration applications must register for and receive Virginia State Board of Election training to conduct voter registration drives. This policy went into effect July 1.
SBE is hosting in-person training at their offices at 1100 Bank St. in Richmond. Training is held from 10:30 a.m. until noon Aug. 13 and 22, and Sept. 11 and 25.

JCC Cooling Center Open
James City County citizens and visitors can cool off at the James City County Recreation Center during times of high heat and humidity.
The Recreation Center, located at 5301 Longhill Road, is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Service animals are allowed in the building.

Cooling Assistance Applications Available
James City County’s Department of Social Services is accepting cooling assistance applications for cooling equipment purchase or repair.
Eligible households must house at least one individual who is age 60 or older, disabled, or under age 6. The maximum gross monthly income before taxes is $1,211 for one person or $2,498 for a household with four people.
Assistance is provided based on fund availability. Applications are due by Aug. 15. For more information, visit Social Services’ website or call 757-259-3100.
