The hot weather will back off this weekend, but not so much that you’ll need your coat, so don’t worry! Film
Thursday’s mean time for the Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Series! This week they’re showing “Letter From an Unknown Woman” (1948), which is about an aging playboy who prepares to leave Vienna to avoid a duel. He receives a letter from a mystery woman, confessing that she has secretly loved him for years. This quiet, elegant drama about the consequences of romantic obsession was directed by Max Ophuls and stars Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. Here’s the calendar link.
Books and Talks
The Institute of Bill of Rights Law at the William and Mary Law School, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Williamsburg Regional Library presents Constitutional Conversations, the award-winning nine-month long examination of our nation’s founding document. Thursday evening, William and Mary law students will lead age-appropriate discussions on constitutional topics for adults and middle and high school students. The student topic is, “What Problems Lie Ahead for America’s Democracy?” The session for adults will focus on “How has the Constitution Shaped the Rule of Law in Other Societies?” Check out the calendar for all the details.
History Happenings
Historic Endview plantation is hosting a Civil War reenactment this weekend of General Henry Wise’s attacks on the Union-occupied town of Williamsburg. There will be battles, demonstrations and lectures, as well as a chance to see what camp life was like. Check the calendar to find out more about this fun event.
Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendant of people who lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park, will be hosting a presentation and book signing at Freedom Park on Saturday afternoon. The park is the site of an 18th-century cemetery, the Revolutionary War Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary (1781), and a 17th century domicile that has produced archaeological research items from the early colonial period (1680-1730). Music and the Arts
Stephen Bennett returns to the Williamsburg Library Theatre for a concert Saturday night as part of the Williamsburg Regional Library’s Dewey Decibel Concert Series. Since Bennett’s 1987 first-place win at the National Flatpicking Championship in Winfield, Kan., he has become known as a versatile guitarist who consistently garners critical praise and audience enthusiasm for his compositions and live performances. Colonial Williamsburg’s Employee Arts and Crafts Show and Sale will be going on Saturday and Sunday at the Historic Triangle Community Services Building. CW employees, volunteers and retirees will be on hand selling handmade gifts that include items such as jams, handmade paintings and lots more. The calendar has all the details.
Fundraisers
WJCC Schools’ central office staff is hosting a Relay for Life event Saturday called “Feathers Fly for Pat’s Parrott Heads.” Come out to support a survivor or honor someone you know who has lost the battle. Relay for Life, which supports the American Cancer Society, helps people organize overnight community fundraising walk events for the national charity. The Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary will host the 2nd Annual TribeFest for the Cure, a music festival benefitting the Tidewater affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The event will feature face painting and moon bounces for kids, educational materials, a silent auction and a wine auction, live local bands, beer for adults and local food. WYDaily and 92.3 The Tide are some of the many co-sponsors of the event that will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday in the courtyard of Miller Hall at the College of William & Mary.
Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) at the College of William & Mary is hosting its seventh annual Benefit Gala: Our Greatest Gifts. The event will happen Saturday evening at Walsingham Academy, and includes a dinner catered by Buon Amici. There will be an auction featuring jewelry, gift baskets, artwork and sports memorabilia, including a football and jersey autographed by Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco. The Harris Simon Trio and the a capella group The Gentlemen of the College will provide some entertainment. Colonial CASA is hosting CASAblanca on Saturday evening. It’s an evening of fun in an old Hollywood-style setting to raise funds for CASA’s mission, which is to serve as a voice for abused and neglected children in local courts. Here’s the calendar link with more information.
Saturday evening is The Jam Session, a casual music event featuring local musicians playing some of their favorite songs and raise money for local combat veterans. There is no fee, but donations can be made to the Williamsburg VFW Post 6439. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. All money raised goes to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6439 – the calendar has all the details.
Outdoor Events
Join Ann Walters at New Quarter Park on Saturday to learn more about the outdoor treasure hunting game called Geocaching. Geocachers navigate to specific sets of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the Geocache container hidden at a location. All you need to play is a handheld GPS or a GPS-enabled Smartphone and access to the official Geocaching website. There are about a dozen caches hidden at New Quarter Park and about 60 others located within 5 miles. Kids of all ages love a good treasure hunt! The weekend hunt will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
The JCC/W Master Gardeners will be giving a tour of the Williamsburg Botanical Garden in Freedom Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. Please register for the walk on the WBG website.
