NetworkWilliamsburg’s Nonprofit Board Training series has 15 new local graduates.
The training class, started in 2010, is designed for people interested in serving on a nonprofit Board, as well as for those currently serving who want to better understand the roles, responsibilities, and rewards of serving. Graduates also have access to resources and online forums with former graduates, as well as toNetworkWilliamsburg’s monthly continuing education series.
The most recent board training class was held at Virginia Company Bank and led by Lisa Freeman of E.L. Freeman, a local fundraising counseling firm. Topics covered included board governance, financial oversight, board meetings, fundraising, and more.
Susan Branch Smith, who works for BaseCamp Productions and was one of this year’s graduates, found the class to be very valuable. “I’ve served on nonprofit boards, but until this workshop I didn’t understand what I needed to know about responsibilities and liabilities.
“The Nonprofit Board Training through Network Williamsburg is essential for all of us who want to volunteer our valuable time — in the best way possible,” he said.
The need for training like this is essential to ensure that nonprofits have Board members who are committed to helping move the organization forward, according to Karen Dutro, Executive Director ofNetworkWilliamsburg. “Nonprofits in the area will now benefit from access to knowledgeable, productive, committed members who better understand their role in helping to meet the goals of the organization,” Dutrow said.
The first Nonprofit Board Training class was held in 2010. Since that time, more than 65 community members have participated. For more information, visit the NewtworkWilliamsburg website.
