The play’s the thing
Williamsburg Players perform the classic “Jesus Christ Superstar,” a rock opera musical based on the last seven days of Jesus’ life, is told as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Beginning with the preparation for the arrival for Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the crucifixion, it highlights political and interpersonal struggles that existed between Judas and Jesus. Originally produced on Broadway in 1971, this classic rock opera musical has held world acclaim for over 40 years. The show opens Thursday at 8 p.m., with performances scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 6-8, Sept. 13-15 and Sept. 20-22) and on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Click here for details.
Zoo/Baby at the WRL – Panglossian Productions and Williamsburg Regional Library jointly present “Zoo/Baby,” an evening of great American absurdist theatre, featuring Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Edward Albee’s play “The Zoo Story” and Tony Award winner Christopher Durang’s play “Baby With The Bathwater.” “The Zoo Story’s” witty dialogue and existentialist themes tell the story of a young man alienated from the human race. It’s a searing story of loneliness and the desperate need for recognition that builds to a violent, shattering climax. “Baby With The Bathwater” traces the life of Daisy Dingleberry, a boy whose confused and demented parents dress him as a girl for the first 15 years of his life. Wildly funny and brazenly satiric, “Baby With The Bathwater” keeps the laughter bubbling with its good-humored wackiness. Performances are Sept. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees on Sept. 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre. Click here for details.

Hare and Tortoise 8K Run/Walk to Benefit Ovarian Cancer – New Quarter Park is the place Saturday morning for the Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run. Race day registration and packet pickup start at 7:45 a.m., with the 1-mile fun run/walk at 8:30 a.m. and the 8K run/walk at 9 a.m. The Run funds medical service provider grants for ovarian cancer screening and testing. The Williamsburg Gymnastics Parents Association is holding an 18-hole, four-player Captain’s Choice golf tourney on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Williamsburg National Golf Club. Open house and archaeology at Kittiewan Plantation
Come visit this beautiful, 18th-century plantation and home of the Archeological Society of Virginia in Charles City County, Virginia, which will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The plantation highlights collections from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries and archeological collections from across the Commonwealth. Aleck Loker will sign “La Florida” Friday at 2 p.m., then again on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “La Florida” gives an overview of the Spanish exploration of the New World and offers new insights into the clash of European and indigenous cultures which resulted.
Jack and Judy Witt will sign “Goshen Revisited” Saturday at 2 p.m. Over the years, Virginia’s Goshen River Valley has become a sort of artistic and spiritual Mecca for these two artists. “Goshen Revisited” chronicles their journeys there in vivid poetry, prose and watercolor.
Story Hour – Please join us every Wednesday and Saturday morning from 11 a.m. to noon in our Children’s Department for some fun stories and activities. This event is free.
Welcome to football season
Youth football has begun, which if you watch it will give you an idea of where all the great Bay Rivers football teams get their start. Come out Saturday to watch the Williamsburg Hornets Green Team take on the visiting Tri Citi Hurricanes of Newport News. Games start at 9:30 a.m. with the Mites taking the field. Up next will be the Mighty Mites at 11 a.m. followed by the Midgets at 12:30 p.m. Closing out the day will be the Juniors playing at 2 p.m. The Williamsburg Hornets Gold Team travels to Poquoson Middle School, where they will play the Poquoson Bulls. Free films at the WRL
To mark the upcoming Fashion Week in New York City and Paris where new haute couture collections will be unveiled, Williamsburg Regional Library’s free Thursday Afternoon Film Series in September features movies that prominently feature couture clothing. This week’s film is “Fashions of 1934,” a fun musical comedy from that year in which William Powell and Bette Davis play fashion industry con artists who open a couture house in Paris. Orry-Kelly designed the outlandish costumes that Busby Berkeley uses to great effect in a wild, ostrich feather dance number. Frank McHugh and Verree Teasdale costar under the direction of William Dieterle. The films are shown starting at 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. These movies are screened free of charge and tickets or reservations are not required. Learn to belly dance, the American Tribal Style way
A six-week session begins Friday at 6 p.m. at ArtInspired Studios in York County. This session will focus on posture and basic steps that make up the vocabulary of American Tribal Style bellydance. Using the FCBD class format (don’t worry – you will learn what these abbreviations mean), you will learn how to create the movement of each step through easy to understand explanations, we will discuss traditional music and rhythms, how to use zills (finger cymbals), and cues and formations. Star party and laser light show at the VLM
Free sky observing at the Virginia Living Museum begins at sunset Saturday (weather permitting). Planetarium program “Virginia Skies” begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by laser light-and-music shows: “Laser Magic” at 8:30, “Laser Zeppelin” at 10, and “Dark Side of the Moon” at 11:30.
