WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary football standout Hollis Mathis earned a rookie minicamp invite with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

Mathis becomes the fourth W&M player to join an NFL organization in recent days, as offensive lineman Charles Grant was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders with the 99th overall pick in the third round while wide receiver Matthew Akuchie and safety Marcus Barnes earned rookie minicamp invites by the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively.

The group will join an impressive list of former Tribe standouts who are currently on NFL rosters – Nate Lynn (Lions), Bill Murray (Bears), Luke Rhodes (Colts), Colby Sorsdal (Lions) and Owen Wright (Ravens).

One of the nation’s most dynamic playmakers, Mathis is one of just two players in the history of college football to total 1,000 career yards passing, rushing and receiving.

The Pittsburgh, Pa., native finished his record-setting career with 1,716 passing yards, 1,091 rushing yards and 1,005 receiving yards. Additionally, he accounted for 25 career touchdowns (10 passing, 10 rushing, 5 receiving).

As a senior, Mathis led W&M with 52 receptions for 602 yards and three touchdowns catches.

In 2019, Mathis became just the third true freshman to start at quarterback in school history and the second to start a season opener. During his highly successful rookie campaign he set a true freshman single-season school record for total offense (1,522), passing yards (976) and rushing touchdowns (8). Additionally, he ranked second in the CAA in yards per completion (14.1).

In addition to excelling on the field, Mathis also earned CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll accolades multiple times and garnered W&M’s Provost Award.
