Colonial Downs Readying Track for Historic Virginia Derby

NEW KENT — Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent is busy preparing the track for the historic Virginia Derby — Virginia’s first-ever Kentucky Derby qualifier race — to be held on March 15.

The winning horse will secure a spot in the field for the 151st Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 3 at Churchill Downs.

According to the venue, crews are currently preparing the racing surface and building special seating accommodations and fan experiences.

“We’re pulling out all the stops to make this historic day of racing an unforgettable experience for new and returning fans,” said Senior Director of Racing Operations Frank Hopf. “Our reserved seats sold out in just a few weeks, but $5 General Admission tickets are still available for fans looking to experience some of that Kentucky Derby excitement right here in our own backyard.”

Over the next two weeks, Colonial Downs said it will be announcing a series of promotions, experiences, and special guests for Virginia Derby Day. This will include a live performance by ’80s tribute band The Deloreans included with every ticket purchase.
