NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University received two major awards as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference released its year-end men’s basketball honors Wednesday. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines was named the Player of the Year in the conference for the third time in his remarkable career, and John Krikroian and his staff were awarded the Coaching Staff of the Year recognition. In addition, sophomore Toa Hollenbeck was named first team, and junior Collin Hines was selected second team All-Conference by the C2C.

Jahn Hines, from Norfolk, Va., recently moved into second place on CNU’s all-time scoring list, and has been named All-American three times. The Norview High School product has averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season, and has gone over the 30-point mark four times for the Captains. Hines had his #22 jersey retired during Senior Day ceremonies, becoming just the seventh player to achieve the honor. He is now just 14 points shy of 2,000 for his career, and has received the league’s Player of the Week honor eight times this season, including the last five weeks.

Toa Hollenbeck, a product of Chesapeake, Va., is second on the squad behind Jahn Hines in the scoring column. He has enjoyed an outstanding sophomore season, and is currently averaging 14.3 points per game and also tops the squad with 40 three-point field goals. Hollenbeck was honored as the Rookie of the Year last year in the C2C.

Collin Hines, a junior from Norfolk, is averaging 7.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest for the Captains this season, and receives his first All-Conference honor from the C2C. The Norview High School grad has posted five double-doubles this season, and was the MVP of last season’s C2C Tournament at Mary Washington.

John Krikorian won his 400th game as a head coach on Saturday in CNU’s regular season-ending victory at Mary Washington. He has guided the Captains for the last 14 seasons, and led CNU to its first-ever National Championship two seasons ago. Krikorian’s teams at CNU have won at least 18 games per season, and have advanced to the conference championship game every year for the last ten seasons in the Capital and Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conferences. His squads have reached the NCAA National Quarterfinals in each of the last four seasons, becoming just the fourth program in Division III history to achieve that feat.

Christopher Newport is currently ranked eighth in the nation and the Captains are 21-4 heading to the Coast-To-Coast Tournament beginning Friday in Salisbury, Md. CNU will play UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Salisbury University’s Maggs Center in the semifinals of the two-day tournament. The Championship game is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday.
