WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary baseball Head Coach Rob McCoy announced the hiring of Brad Mincey as pitching coach.
“We are really excited to add Brad to our staff,” McCoy said. “He brings a wealth of high level playing and coaching experience and has a track record of getting the most out of each staff he works with. As well, he is an asset on the recruiting trail and will aid in our effort to continue to recruit first class student-athletes here to William & Mary.”
Mincey spent three seasons with Longwood baseball as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping the program to three straight seasons with at least 20 wins. In his first season with the Lancers, Mincey’s staff led the team to its best conference winning percentage and first 20-win season since 2016.
In the 2024 MLB Draft, Kevin Warunek, a member of Mincey’s pitching staff, became Longwood’s first player drafted since 2017 as the left-hander was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 18th round.
Over his three seasons in Farmville, Mincey was a part of historic moments in the Longwood program including the program’s highest ranked victory over No. 14 Campbell, a season series sweep of Richmond for the first time in team history and the team’s first road win at Richmond.
The Lancers consistently saw in-season and postseason honors under Mincey’s leadership. In 2024, sophomore Ethan Walker was tabbed Preseason All-Big South and senior Sean Gibbons earned Big South weekly honors. The year prior, Walker earned Big South All-Freshman honors and Ryan Miller was named All-Big South Honorable Mention. Four pitchers earned weekly awards in Mincey’s first season with the program.
Prior to his time at Longwood, Mincey developed a conference-leading pitching staff at North Carolina Central in two seasons. The Eagles led the MEAC in six statistics, three of them ranking nationally, in 2021. He also produced the highest draft pick in N.C. Central history with All-MEAC First Team and 10th Round MLB Draft selection Austin Vernon.
Mincey started his coaching career as the head coach of a high school player showcase program, Rock Solid, in Wilmington, N.C., followed with a stint as coach of the Holly Springs Salamanders in the Coastal Plains League and an assistant coach of the Fayetteville Tech in its opening season.
In college, Mincey helped lead East Carolina to three NCAA Regionals and one Super Regional appearance as a two-time All-Conference pitcher. Concluding his collegiate playing career in the MLB Draft, Mincey played professionally in the Miami Marlins organization, posting a 3.71 ERA over 87 appearances.
