WILMINGTON, N.C. — No. 71 William & Mary’s four-match win streak came to an end at the hands of defending CAA Champion UNCW, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon.
A day after a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 win over New Mexico in which the Tribe (9-7, 1-3 CAA) rallied after dropping the doubles point and the first set in all six singles match, W&M could not find the same magic on Sunday. UNCW (7-5, 2-0 CAA) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, before winning the first three singles matches off the court to record the league victory.
Graduate student Satchel Benn and freshman Oliver Hague won their eighth in a row at No. 2 doubles to pull the Tribe even in pairs competition. The Tribe duo topped Jordi Domenech and Jonathan Baron, 6-3, to improve to 13-5 overall and 9-4 at No. 2.
In singles, UNCW won the first set in five of six singles matches and claimed straight sets victories at No. 1 and No. 3. W&M mounted a comeback forcing third sets at No. 4 and No. 6.
Benn took the opening set from Bekhzod Rasamatov by a 7-5 scoreline at No. 2, before the Seahawk player forced a third set by claiming the second.
Graduate student Bill Duo (No. 6) and Hague responded by winning the second set at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Unfortunately, UNCW’s Gabriel Hurtado bounced back to clinch the team victory by taking the third set from Hague.
