NEWPORT NEWS — Following the fifth straight conference championship for Christopher Newport women’s basketball, three CNU players were named to the 2024 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team.
Leading the way, junior Hannah Kaloi was named the Most Valuable Player while seniors Alivia Giles and Gabbi San Diego joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
In addition to the three Captains, Jordan Carpenter and Sydney Sherman from Mary Washington, Amanda Inserra from UC Santa Cruz, and Nicole Miller from Salisbury were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Christopher Newport picked up a pair of wins in the postseason tournament to capture the 2024 conference crown. First, the Captains defeated No. 4-seed Salisbury by a score of 80-58 and then CNU captured a hard-fought 71-67 win over No. 2-seed Mary Washington.
Kaloi had a pair of terrific showings in the conference tournament, leading the team in scoring in both games. First, the junior forward scored 13 points against Salisbury and then added a game-high 17 points in the title game. She added 11 rebounds combined and went 6-for-7 in critical free-throw shooting opportunities.
She becomes the fourth different tournament MVP since 2020 and joins a group that includes Sondra Fan, Anaya Simmons, and Gabbi San Diego. San Diego earned All-Tournament honors for the second straight year after being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 version of the postseason event.
This year, San Diego showed up in the biggest game of the season when she poured in 13 poitns and added three assists against the Eagles in the championship game. She was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and added a blocked shot and one steal. Giles scored 21 points in the two games and added 10 rebounds while helping CNU dominate the paint in the two games.
The All-Tournament selections and the rest of the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women’s basketball team now await the decision of the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship Committee, which will be revealed during a live webcast at NCAA.com on Monday at 2:30 p.m. The full bracket, including CNU’s first round opponent and game location, will be revealed during the webcast and posted on CNUsports.com shortly after.
