W&M Field Hockey Battles No. 4 Duke in Narrow 1-0 Setback

(Tribe Athletics)

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary field hockey battled close with No. 4 team Duke on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field. A third-quarter Blue Devil goal provided all the scoring on the day, but the Tribe had its chances in falling to the nationally-ranked ACC squad.

The Blue Devils (10-1) broke through in the 43rd minute with the game’s only goal. Josephine Paide carried the ball into the circle following a foul, and her shot beat Tribe goalkeeper Maddie George to the near side boards to give the visitor a 1-0 lead.

W&M’s best chance of the afternoon came in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Graduate forward Lonica McKinney made a steal inside the Duke circle. She fed back to Lauren Curran, but her shot was blocked away by Blue Devil goalkeeper Piper Hampsch.

Duke held a 7-3 advantage in shots and each team generated two penalty corners. George recorded four saves in cage for the Tribe (4-5).

The Blue Devils put three of their four first-quarter shots on goal, but George was up to the task with a stop on each of the three chances.

In the second quarter, W&M generated back-to-back penalty corner opportunities in the 22nd minute. The Tribe could not break through though as Audrey Domovich’s shot on the initial corner was blocked away.
