Audrey Domovich’s First-Quarter Goals Lead W&M to CAA Win over Northeastern

(Tribe Athletics)

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary used penalty corners to its advantage converting two into first-quarter goals on the way to a 2-1 win over Northeastern in CAA action on Friday afternoon.

Graduate defender Audrey Domovich scored twice over a 2:17 stretch off corners to provide all the scoring the Tribe (3-3) would need in improving to 2-0 in CAA play. Friday’s contest was moved up four hours from its original start time of 6 p.m. due to the impending inclement weather expected to hit the Hampton Roads area from Tropical Storm Ophelia.

The Tribe started fast against the Huskies (4-4, 0-1 CAA), outshooting its visitors from the North, 5-1, in the opening period and generating a trio of corner chances. Domovich got the Tribe on the board with a shot from the top of the circle into the right-side boards in the ninth minute.

Just over two minutes later, it was again Domovich off a corner, but this time she went to the left of the keeper for her second goal of the match. Junior Pyper Friedman, with the insert, and senior Maddie McGaughey, with the stop, picked up assists on each of the Tribe’s two goals.

The brace was the first of Domovich’s career and the third this season for the Tribe. Friedman scored twice on the road at No. 12 Wake Forest and in the CAA opener at Towson last week. It marked Friedman’s second career game with two assists and the helpers were the first in the Green and Gold for McGaughey.

W&M dominated the stat sheet in the opening 30 minutes, outshooting NU 7-1 and generating four corners to the visitors’ 0.

It was a different story in the second half as the Huskies picked up the pace, especially in the third period. NU generated a pair of penalty corners and had seven shots in the third, finally breaking through for a goal in the 42nd minute. Lauren Rowe, a three-time All-CAA First Team pick, converted the chance with a hard shot from the top of the circle into the left-side boards to narrow the gap to 2-1.

The Tribe defense held tight from there as NU mustered just two shots and one corner in the final 15 minutes.
