W&M Women’s Soccer Records Third-Straight Shutout in Road Win at Richmond

(Tribe Athletics)

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary women’s soccer registered its third-straight shutout to open the year on the way to a 1-0 victory at Richmond on Thursday evening. It marks the first time since 2011 that the Tribe tallied three-straight shutouts to open a season.

The Tribe also ran its season-opening unbeaten streak to three games, improving to 2-0-1 on the year. The Green and Gold is unbeaten in its first three for the first time since 2017.

W&M got on the board in the 15th minute thanks to a own goal. Sophomore Ivey Crain gained space down the left side in the penalty area toward the end line. Her cross to the back post looked destined for the foot of junior striker Gabriella Kurtas, but it bounced off Richmond defender Gwen Howell and into the goal to provide the Tribe with all the scoring it would need.

The Tribe defense was once again dominant in recording the clean sheet. Graduate goalkeeper Zoe Doughty was not tested in the opening 45 minutes, while junior Morgan Wood picked up a pair of saves in maintaining the clean sheet in the second half.

After managing only three shots in the first half, W&M turned up the pressure in the second 45 minutes. The Green and Gold outshot the home side, 14-4, in the second half, putting four of those chances on goal.

For the game, the Tribe dominated the stat sheet, outshooting UR (1-1-1), 17-6. Crain led W&M with four shots, while juniors Leah Iglesias and Emma D’Alesandro each had three. The Tribe also had five corner kicks compared to four for the Spiders.
