Little by little, the Hampton Roads Academy football team is making progress.
Outmanned, as it has been in each of four games this season, the Navigators held undefeated Fuqua 19 points below its scoring average in falling, 39-13, Friday night at Gilver Field.
Ed Newman rushed 5 times for 94 yards in the first half on his way to a game-high 106 yards on just 7 carries. He scored twice in the first half, once on a pass. The Falcons rolled up 349 yards on the ground to control the game.
The entire first half was played in HRA territory. Still, the Navigators (0-4) were able to hold the Falcons (3-0) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes before Jeffrey Fariss ran in from the 5.
Newman, who did not start in the backfield, came in and rambled 50 yards for a touchdown just before the quarter ended, giving Fuqua a 14-0 lead.
HRA, which had given up an average of more than 49 points a game in its first three losses, yielded two points when an attempted punt was snapped through the end zone. The Falcons quickly took advantage again when the free kick was returned to the HRA 46, Newman tacked on 33 yards on two carries, a lateral picked up 4 more, and Devin Allen found Newman for a 9-yards scoring pass.
Nicholas Fariss added a 29-yard field goal just before the half ended for a 26-0 lead.
HRA and Fuqua traded two touchdowns each in the second half. Khaliff Jimmison hit Lane Slate for touchdowns of 14 and 35 yards. Fuqua countered with Allen running for one TD and passing for another.
Fuqua had scored 116 points in its first two victories, and HRA had given up 47, 49 and 53 points in earlier losses. This time, though, the elastic Navigator defense wouldn’t give up.
