SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The William & Mary baseball team opened its trip to California with a 12-3 setback to No. 3 Oregon State on Saturday afternoon. With the decision the Tribe falls to 5-4, while the Beavers improve to 9-1.
Senior Josh Smith, junior Ryder Miconi and sophomore Ryan Hall led the Tribe with multiple hit games. Hall had a team-high three hits, while Josh Smith bettered his hitting streak to 11 games.
Oregon State started the game’s offense with a run in the top of the second inning. Trever Morrison hit a one-out homer, giving OSU an early 1-0 lead.
The Beavers biggest inning came in the top of third inning when they plated four runs, all with two outs. With one out, Cadyn Grenier walked followed by single to center by Nick Madrigal. After a strikeout, Logan Ice hit a two-out homer. The rally continued as Morrison doubled into right center field. The next batter, Jack Anderson singled up the middle, giving Oregon State a 5-0 advantage.
Again Oregon State got a run in the top of the fourth inning. Christian Donahue reached on a one-out hit by pitch, moving to third on a single from Grenier. Madrigal squeezed Donahue in from third making the score 6-0.
OSU tacked on two-more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ice led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a Morrison single. After an out, Bully King doubled clearing the bases, moving the score to 8-0.
W&M rallied and tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Hunter Smith started the inning with a lead off walk, moving to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a groundout. Senior Josh Smith poked a one-out single to right field, scoring the Tribe’s first run. A slew of errors after a Charley Gould single scored both Josh Smith and Gould, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
The Beavers got the three runs back in the top of the sixth. Grenier led off of the inning with a single, moving to second on an error. Madrigal followed with a walk. After an out, Ice tripled, bringing home two. A groundout from Morrison allowed for Ice to score, pushing OSU’s lead to 11-3
OSU added one more run in the top of the eighth. Ice added a homer putting the Beavers up 12-3.
Junior Nick Brown was saddled with his second loss this season for the Tribe. He allowed eight runs on eight hits, while he struck out four. Senior Andrew White pitched 0.2 innings scoreless, while freshman Bodie Sheehan also pitched scoreless inning. Junior John Yoest allowed just one run on two hits with a strikeout in his two innings.
Bryce Fehmel was credited with the win for Oregon State, improving to 4-0. He tossed three innings allowing just one hit, while striking out two. Offensively, Ice led the Beavers with three hits and six RBI.
The Tribe now plays a three-game series against San Diego. The series gets underway at 8 p.m. Sunday, before games on Monday and Tuesday – both of which start at 9 p.m. All times are EST.
