Lafayette’s football team completed its third consecutive perfect Bay Rivers District season, as the Rams crushed New Kent 48-12 at home Thursday.
The Rams took care of business Thursday with a steady combination of rushing and passing touchdowns.
Lafayette stuck to the run game in the first quarter as John Douglass opened the game with a 6-yard touchdown run to put Lafayette up 7-0. Later that quarter, Joseph Kraegenbrink added a 17-yard touchdown run to put the Rams up 14-0.
Wide receiver Hezekiah Grimsley had his best performance of the season, hauling in three touchdown passes from quarterback Cheyton Pine. Grimsley opened the second quarter with a 49-yard touchdown and closed the quarter with a 31-yard touchdown.
In between Grimsley’s second-quarter scores, New Kent’s Davion Barnes took the ball into the end zone from seven yards out. At halftime, Lafayette held a 27-6 advantage.
The second half opened with more action from Grimsley as he caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Pine, his third of the game. Caleb Kraegenbrink got into the action later in the quarter as he busted off a 38-yard touchdown run that put the Rams way in front 41-6.
Knowledge Wallace produced the final Lafayette score of the game as he returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown. A late New Kent touchdown only made the outcome look better for the Trojans, who were nowhere close to reaching the Rams.
Lafayette (10-0) will now wait to find out who its opponent will be in the Group 3A East tournament that begins next week.
