Field Hockey Roundup: York, Tabb Advance in Group 4A West Tournament

York field hockeyYork’s game in the Group 4A West quarterfinal round on Monday was a thrilling one as the Falcons got past Maggie Walker 2-1 in overtime on the road.

The opening 30 minutes of the game were slow for both teams as the first half ended scoreless.

Action picked up in the second half as York earned the game’s first goal exactly midway through the second half.

With 15 minutes left, Taylor Brewer collected the ball at the top of Maggie Walker’s circle, weaved through the defense and beat the goalie for the game’s opening goal.

York held a 1-0 lead for the next 10 minutes when Maggie Walker responded with a goal of its own to tie the game at 1-1 and send the regional game into sudden-death overtime.

The extra period did not last long as York earned a penalty corner less than two minutes into overtime. The corner fell to the stick of Bentley Zabicki, who fired a shot at the net. Courtney Ray was waiting in front of the goal and redirected the ball into the back of the cage for the game-winning score.

York (11-5) will advance to play at Western Albemarle in the Group 4A West semifinal round Wednesday.

Warhill Season Ends With Loss to Western Albemarle

In a game featuring little offense, a first-half goal was all Western Albemarle needed to defeat Warhill 1-0 at home Monday in the quarterfinal round of the Group 4A West tournament.

Playing in its fourth postseason game over an eight-day span, Warhill struggled to find offense against a defensively minded opponent. It was the same problem the Lions had during a 1-0 loss to Poquoson in the Conference 25 championship game.

After entering halftime trailing Western Albemarle 1-0, the Lions’ offense could not find the back of the cage to equalize the game while the defense hung strong.

Warhill (11-6) closes its season with back-to-back losses, but showed significant growth during the season after having to replace 11 seniors from last season’s conference championship team.

Individual statistics were not reported for this game.

Western Albemarle 1, Warhill 0
