Jamestown’s golf team finished the second and final round of play in the High School Invitational at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian in the same place in the standings as the first round.
By the time the last stroke was recorded Wednesday, the Eagles found themselves tied for 12th place as a team after carding a season-best 309 round.
“We were there to find our identity as a team and we accomplished it,” Jamestown Coach Doug Meredith said. “Can we shoot the scores we need to at the state level? We figured out that we can. We just have to do it more than once.”
Jamestown finished the tournament 55-over par with 631 total strokes, which was 61 strokes off the winning team Saint Christopher’s — the only team to shoot below par after both rounds were completed.
The individual medalist of the tournament also came from Saint Christopher’s as Boyd Peete shot a three-under 69 on the final day of competition to cap off a seven-under performance for the tournament.
Triston Buckley, the top performer for Jamestown on day one of the tournament, saw his score slide in the second round. After shooting a two-over 74 during the first round, Buckley shot a seven-over 79 on Wednesday.
Will Bell, who shot a six-over 78 on Tuesday, followed with a similar performance, carding another six-over 78 on Wednesday.
The final two scorers for Jamestown, Matthew Shield and C.J. Montero, each saw significant improvements on the second day of competition.
Shield followed up Tuesday’s 10-over 82 with a five-over 77 on Wednesday, while Montero rebounded from a disappointing 18-over 90 with a team-best three-over 75 on Wednesday.
“The wheels came off mid-round yesterday, but he rebounded nicely,” Meredith said of Montero. “I think they all got something out of this. In particular, I think C.J. being able to bounce back on day two like he did was huge.”
In all, Meredith said he was proud of his team’s performance and their ability to show they can handle the big state.
“I was proud of the fact they were able to find it in day two,” he said. “It’s a very intimidating tournament. One of the reasons we go there is because we’re there with the best of the best, including the 6A schools in Northern Virginia and the private schools. It’s a big stage for us and that’s something we might face in the postseason.”
Jamestown will continue its season during a Bay Rivers District match at Colonial Heritage Golf Club on Thursday.
