On Friday, the Virginia High School League continued to make adjustments to the state wrestling and swimming tournaments.
To call this week’s scheduling a mess would be an understatement, Bruton Athletic Director Richard Onesty said.
After the VHSL pushed up the start time of Friday’s wrestling tournaments for Groups 1A through 4A by an hour on Thursday, the organization announced the shortening of the wrestling tournament to a one-day, single elimination tournament via a news release.
The VHSL had been wary of potential winter weather in Southwest Virginia all week, but have had to make sweeping changes to the scheduled tournaments over the past few days due to both the snowstorm earlier this week and an expected 1 to 3 inches of snow Saturday, Onesty said.
Instead of starting today and finishing Saturday, the entire wrestling tournament will be completed by tonight. Weigh-ins will take place at 1 p.m., followed by the quarterfinals from 3 to 6 p.m. The finals will run from 8 to 10 p.m. and will be preceded by the semifinals from 6 to 8 p.m.
The tournament will be held with no breaks throughout the day in an attempt expedite the event.
While the participating Historic Triangle schools — Bruton, Lafayette, Warhill, Grafton, Jamestown and Tabb — will be affected by the wrestling changes, Bruton is also dealing with scheduling changes made to the 2A state swimming championship.
The 2A state swimming championship, which was initially scheduled for Saturday in Christiansburg, has been postponed to Tuesday.
The championships for both Group 3A and 4A are running concurrently today at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center — a change from the original plan to have 4A compete Thursday.
The Conference 25 basketball tournament schedules were re-released on Friday after winter weather pushed back the start of the tournament from Tuesday.
The tournament field, which includes Lafayette, Warhill and York, has been cut in half with only the top-four seeds playing in the semifinals. Both the boys and girls tournaments will start on Monday.
The girls matchups will feature Park View at Warhill and Poquoson at Lafayette. On the boys side, York will travel to Colonial Heights and Lafayette will visit Park View.
All semifinal games will be played at 6 p.m.
The finals for each tournament will be played Wednesday and hosted by the higher seed.
