Bruton’s boys and girls basketball teams will both advance to the Region 2A East tournament without having to step onto the court for a conference tournament.
Richard Onesty, the athletic director at Bruton, confirmed Thursday the cancellation of both Conference 33 tournaments. The four conferences that make up 2A East — 33, 34, 35 and 36 — will each send their top-four seeds straight to the region tournaments.
The Bruton boys were the top seed in the Conference 33 tournament, which guarantees the Panthers a top-four seed in the 16-team region tournament. The girls were seeded third in the conference tournament, which will place them among the top-12 teams in the region.
Both Bruton teams will play Amelia County on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. The boys will play at Bruton and the girls will play at Amelia County.
The 3A and 4A schools are still waiting to learn the fate of their respective conference and region tournaments.
Warhill Athletic Director Dan Mullen said the start of the Region 3A East tournament has been pushed back to Feb. 27 to accommodate later starts to conference tournaments.
While the region tournament has been pushed back, Conference 25 schools — Lafayette, Warhill and York — are still waiting to learn how the conference tournaments will be formatted.
The 4A schools in the Historic Triangle — Grafton, Jamestown and Tabb — are scheduled to play the quarterfinals of the Conference 19 tournament on Saturday, the semifinals on Monday, Feb. 23, the girls finals on Tuesday, Feb. 24 and the boys finals on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
On the boys side, Jamestown will host Powhatan in the lone quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will play Grafton in one semifinal at 2 p.m., while Tabb travels to Smithfield at 7 p.m. for the other.
The girls tournament starts with Jamestown playing a road game against Smithfield at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Tabb will host the winner of that game in one semifinal at 7 p.m., with Grafton playing a home game against Powhatan at 5:30 p.m. in the other.
The TCIS basketball tournaments, which include Walsingham Academy and Hampton Roads Academy, have been pushed back until Saturday with some times still to be determined.
The Navigators will play both the boys and girls basketball games at 1 p.m. with the girls at Norfolk Christian and the boys at Norfolk Collegiate.
