Historic Triangle swimmers swam for glory during Friday’s 3A and 4A state swimming championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg.

In the Virginia High School League’s Group 4A state tournament, the Jamestown girls took home its second consecutive team state title, while the boys finished in second place.

Historic Triangle teams that competed in the Group 4A meet are Jamestown, Grafton and Tabb.

The Jamestown girls had three swimmers — Abby Larson, Joelle Vereb, Margaret Williams — win three events.

Larson, a freshman, took home one individual win in the 50-meter freestyle, and helped both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams — both of which included Vereb, Williams and Taylor Vitaletti — finish in first place. Their swim in the 200 freestyle relay set a school record with their 1:36:49 finish.

In addition joining Larson on both the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, Vereb and Williams, each took first place in one individual event. Vereb, a sophomore, won the 100 butterfly, while junior Williams claimed the top spot in the 100 freestyle.

Grafton’s Jacqueline Tinneny, a freshman, won the 100 breaststroke in a 4A meet record of 1:05.97.

In the boys competition, Grafton took home a gold medal, while Tabb finished fifth.

Grafton’s Jonathan Spires, junior, tallied the most first-place finishes of the Historic Triangle swimmers by winning four events. Spires took home individual medals in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle in meet record times, while also swimming to the highest podium in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay with teammates Nathan Kimbel, Tyler Titsch and Kilian Nebe.

Kimbel, a senior, also earned himself an individual win, earning first place in the 100 breaststroke.

Jamestown swimmer Colin Wright, a junior, took first place in the 50 freestyle, while the Tabb 200 relay team of Liam Young, James Kegelman, Aubrey Wroten and Sean Du nabbed first place.

Lafayette, Warhill and York competed in the Group 3A meet Friday, with Lafayette’s boys and girls faring well to place second and third overall, respectively.

Carter Kale of Lafayette, a senior who has committed to swim for Virginia Tech, was a three-time gold medal winner after taking first place in the 500 freestyle, as well as participating on the winning 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Deke Lueker, Conor Flannery and Brett Huckstep joined Kale on the 400 freestyle relay, while Lueker, Flannery and Caleb Aman filled out the 200 medley relay team.

York’s boys finished 18th overall, while Warhill ended the meet in 22nd.

On the girls side, York and Warhill finished 10th and 11th overall, respectively.

Lafayette’s McKinzie Turner took home the gold in the 100 breaststroke, while York’s Alex Slayton won the 50 freestyle in a meet record 23.99.
