With a state-tournament berth already in their back pocket, Warhill’s volleyball team still had business to tend to Saturday.

The reigning 3A East Region champs traveled to Spotsylvania High and defeated Kettle Run 3-0 to defend their title.

The match was held at a neutral site since both teams had won conference championships.

The Lions got things started with a dominant 25-12 win in the opening set before winning the next two 25-21, 25-21.

Two-time defending Conference 25 Player of the Year Alex Koon, who continues to make a good case to receive her second region Player of the Year honor, led Warhill with 22 kills, 9 digs, 4 aces and 3.5 blocks.

Cori Clifton added 25 assists and 8 digs, and Nicole Mulligan finished with 7 kills and 7 aces.

Warhill will host 3A West runner-up Turner Ashby in the 3A state semifinals Tuesday in Williamsburg.

The state championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center.
