Five different players scored during the first 20 minutes, as Warhill’s girls soccer team built an early lead and hung on for a 10-0 win over George Wythe in the 3A South Region quarterfinals Monday at Wanner Stadium.

The Lions dominated from the start, rarely allowing the ball to cross their half of the pitch as George Wythe never recorded a shot on goal.

Shaye Dougherty, who has scored five goals in the past three games, got the scoring started after drilling home a penalty kick less than five minutes into the action.

Lindsey Williams followed with a goal less than a minute later to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.

Margaret Seo, Raven Sickal and Chrissy Heath joined in the scoring with a goal apiece, as Warhill’s lead grew to 5-0 midway through the first half. The score would remain that way into the break as George Wythe packed six of its nine players in the box to stop the bleeding.

With virtually all of George Wythe’s team playing defense for the final 40 minutes, Warhill scored its first goal in roughly 35 minutes of play after a brilliant individual effort from Williams. Williams stole the ball from a George Wythe attacker and then dribbled 80 yards down field weaving in and out of defenders before maneuvering her way into the box and firing a shot from point blank range.

The Lions would score four more times during the final 15 minutes on goals from Emma Johnson, Jordan Hogge, Julia Shawver and Dougherty as their lead grew to 10-0.

The Lions will play the winner of Kettle Run-Loudoun Valley in Wednesday’s semifinals, with the winner securing a berth to next week’s 3A state tournament.
