The only question that remained five minutes into to Monday’s 3A South Region boys soccer quarterfinal between Lafayette and visiting Hopewell was not whether the Rams would win, but by how much.

Fifteen minutes in, Lafayette had five different players score to take a 5-0 lead. Six different Rams’ players would find the net by the time the first half ended, with the home team holding a commanding 11-0 lead.

Doron Davis began the shooting clinic three minutes in, and goals from Reeves Trott, Andrew Vaccaro, Noor Rahman and Josh Brooks quickly followed.

Trott, Vaccaro and Davis would each finish the half with two goals apiece before Rams Coach Brian Sorrell emptied his bench for the final 40 minutes.

Defender Denzel Speed shifted up to play forward and scored the only goal of the second half for Lafayette, which advances to play Kettle Run in the semifinals Wednesday. The semifinal winners are each guaranteed berths to next week’s 3A state tournament.

“It’s a great reward to play in the playoffs,” Sorrell, who was announced the 3A Colonial Rivers Conference Coach of the Year on Monday, said after the game. “The kids who come year-round, they don’t always get to play so it was nice to be able to get everyone some time on the field.”

Kaye’s Late Goal Lifts Grafton Past Hanover

Aaron Kaye scored in the final two minutes to break a scoreless tie and give Grafton a 1-0 victory over Hanover in a 4A South Region quarterfinal Monday at Bailey Field.

The match was mostly a defensive struggle played evenly by both teams.

With 1:22 left on the clock, Reed King sent a ball into the box that deflected off a Hanover player before Kaye swatted it into goal for the game-winner.

With the win, Grafton advances to play the Woodrow Wilson-Nansemond River winner in Wednesday’s semifinal.

York Pulls Away From Huguenot in Second Half

Bailey McClure scored two goals during the final 40 minutes to finish off a hat trick as York ran away from Huguenot in the second half to win Monday’s 3A East Region quarterfinal 5-1 on the road.

McClure’s header off a corner gave York a 1-0 lead early. After Huguenot tied it at 1-1, Chad Latulipe scored to give York a 2-1 lead at the half.

McClure scored twice more during the final 40 minutes and Max Poelker converted a penalty kick to round out the scoring.

The Falcons will play for a berth in next week’s 3A state tournament Wednesday when they play the winner of Loudoun Valley-Culpeper in the region semifinal.
