Softball: Grafton Falls to Smithfield in Extra Innings

Brooke Small’s RBI single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference as Smithfield walked off with a a 2-1 victory over visiting Grafton on Friday.

Smithfield’s reigning BRD Pitcher of the Year Sydney Gay and Grafton’s Hayley Cox, who beat the Packers 1-0 in the teams’ first meeting of the season last month, were both dialed in through six innings as the score remained 0-0 entering the seventh.

Grafton’s Hannah Olson, last year’s district Player of the Year, put the Clippers up 1-0 with an inside the park home run, but the Packers got it back in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to extra innings.

With the win, Smithfield (7-2 BRD) moves into a three-way tie for first atop the Bay Rivers District standings alongside New Kent (8-2 BRD) and York (8-2 BRD). Grafton (8-3 BRD) fell a game behind those three teams in the loss column.
