The last four players on the court who were battling at No. 3 doubles when Thursday’s girls tennis between Grafton and York was suspended due to darkness resumed play Friday afternoon to finish what they started.
York’s Courtney Jenkins and Grace Yi, who were tied 7-7 with Grafton’s Emily Wang and Winnie Zhang when play was called at roughly 8:15 p.m. Thursday, would win the first two games consecutively to polish off a 9-7 victory. More importantly, the win sealed a narrow 5-4 victory for the unbeaten Falcons, who improved to 5-0 (5-0 BRD) on the season. Grafton dropped to 3-2 (2-2 BRD) with the loss.
The two teams split singles 3-3 and were tied 4-4 after York won at No. 1 doubles and Grafton at No. 2. That left the deciding point with the No. 3 doubles match, which finally concluded before the rain hit early Friday evening.
All other Bay Rivers District contests scheduled for Friday have been postponed. The baseball and softball games between host Warhill and York will be made up Saturday at 2 p.m. while other make up games are still pending.
