Private School vs. Public School Hoops Jamboree This Weekend

Private school hoops meets public school hoops this weekend when the Rotary Club of the Historic Triangle hosts its third annual Rotary Invitational Basketball Jamboree on Friday and Saturday at Williamsburg Christian Academy.

The jamboree gives three area public and private school boys and girls basketball teams that do not face each other during the regular season the opportunity to play one another in a VHSL-sanctioned scrimmage.

The participating public schools are Jamestown, Warhill and Lafayette high schools, whose boys and girls teams will each play one game against private school participants Norfolk Collegiate, Bishop Sullivan and host Williamsburg Christian Academy.

Nine boys games will be played Friday and will be followed by nine girls games Saturday with each game consisting of two eight-minute quarters. Games will begin both days at 9 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m.

“It’s a great opportunity for teams to compete against some of the better programs in the area,” WCA’s first-year girls coach Donovan Bridgeforth said of the jamboree. “And for the teams who haven’t started the regular season yet, it’s a good way to try different things and see what you’ve got.”

The price of admission is $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit Rotary Charities with a significant potion being used to help match a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio worldwide. Funds will also go toward the Rotary’s effort to award scholarships to locally deserving students.
