WILLIAMSBURG — The Greater Williamsburg Sports & Event Center will officially open June 24 with a public celebration featuring soccer icon Ali Krieger.

Krieger, a Virginia native and former U.S. women’s national team defender, will attend as the event’s special guest.

The celebration will include a ribbon cutting and open house with representatives from the City of Williamsburg, York County, James City County and Visit Williamsburg.

The sports and event center, located adjacent to the Williamsburg Visitor Center, is designed to host athletic competitions, meetings, expos and community events.

The facility includes 200,000 square feet of space, along with boardrooms, ballrooms, breakout rooms and other flexible-use areas. It also features what organizers say is the largest indoor roll-out turf system in the United States, intended for soccer, football and other sports.

Edward Harris, CEO of Visit Williamsburg, said the opening marks an important moment for the region.

“This is bigger than a grand opening; it’s a transformational moment for Greater Williamsburg and the entire sports community,” Harris said in a statement. “Having Ali Krieger join us to celebrate this facility sends a powerful message about the level of opportunity, inspiration and energy this venue will bring to athletes and families across the region.”

The open house runs from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the ribbon cutting at 4 p.m.
