Lafayette Cheer Eyeing Return to States (w/ Video)

Lafayette High’s cheerleading squad prides itself on being the only WJCC school to reach the state competition each of the past three seasons.

After taking third place at the first Colonial Rivers Conference 25 meet held at Lafayette High on Saturday, the Rams will look to make it four-straight appearances at the state meet when they compete in the Region 3A competition this Saturday at Warhill High School.

On Saturday, the Rams competed against fellow Bay Rivers District schools York, Warhill, Poquoson and New Kent, as well as Colonial Heights, for one of three bids to Regionals.

After “nailing” their team routine, Lafayette secured the third and final berth along with Colonial Heights and Poquoson, who finished first and second, respectively.

“The girls were outstanding and danced their hearts out,” Lafayette coach Ashley Ferguson said afterward. “Everyone brought 150 percent and did their job. We couldn’t have asked for anything else.”

During the regular season, the Rams were one of the top teams in the district finishing first, second and third at the three 10-team Bay Rivers’ mini meets.

Ferguson said her team’s expectations entering Saturday was to win the conference, but added that simply getting to the next round was the ultimate goal.

“We know what we have to do now,” added Ferguson, currently in her sixth season coaching the program. “I thought the dance rocked the house — even the judges were moving — we just have to clean a few things up.”

Three of Lafayette’s seniors — Jennie Verive, Meghan Nunnally and Jordan Blanding — talk about the Rams’ performance following last Saturday’s competition and their expectations moving forward in the video above.

The Region 3A meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warhill High School.
