With the VHSL’s new playoff classification system set to go into effect next school year, the final Bay Rivers District tournaments are officially underway.
Girls soccer, which is the only district sport that will send four teams to the Region I tournament, begins Thursday evening. Boys soccer and baseball/softball, which begin Friday and Saturday, respectively, will send each three teams to regionals.
Below is a breakdown of the playoff scenarios for all four sports, including complete district-tournament schedules.
BASEBALL
Top-seeded Warhill (14-4 BRD) and New Kent (14-4 BRD) tied for the BRD title, with Warhill earning the No. 1 seed by virtue of the power points tie breaker. Warhill accumulated 112 points with its 14 district victories to New Kent’s 101. Both are guaranteed a spot in regionals, with Lafayette nabbing the third and final spot as long as no team seeded fourth or lower wins the tournament.
All opening-round tournament games will be held at the site of the higher seeded team at 1 p.m. Saturday, except for the Lafayette-Poquoson game, which will be played at Plumeri Park at 7 p.m. Next week’s semifinal and championship games will all be held at York High School.

SOFTBALL
District champion Smithfield and runner-up New Kent are headed to regionals. Tabb will join them as long as no team seeded fourth or higher wins the tournament.

Opening-round games will be held at the site of the higher seeded team on Friday, with next week’s semifinals and championship game moving over to Wanner Stadium in James City County.
Lafayette (8-0-1 BRD) and Grafton (8-0-1 BRD) finished tied for the Bay Rivers District title, with the Rams earning the top seed by virtue of the preseason draw.

Tournament play begins Thursday, May 16, at the home site of the higher seeded team. The semifinal rounds will be played at Bailey Field with the championship game being held prior to the boys’ at Wanner Stadium.
With four district teams earning regional bids this season, Jamestown, York, Tabb are guaranteed berths. No. 4 Warhill gets the final spot as long as no team seeded fifth or lower wins the tournament.
