The Williamsburg Royals, a newly formed club lacrosse team made up of mostly ninth-graders from Jamestown, Lafayette and Warhill high schools, won the first two games of its inaugural season this week.
The Royals, who will play a 14-game regular-season and playoff schedule competing against area public high schools as a member of the Hampton Roads Lacrosse High School Division, defeated Kellam (Va. Beach) 6-4 in their season-opener Monday before beating Grafton 10-2 on Wednesday.
In Monday’s season-opening win over Kellam, Royals coach Charlie Turner said strong defensive efforts from Nick Ravida, Bryson Dannewitz, Mason Stocks and goalkeeper Kevin Ravida paved the way for a close 6-4 victory. Jack Hughes, Wynn Berry and Chris Lansford led the offense.
In Wednesday’s 10-2 win over Grafton, six different players scored for the Royals, thanks largely to the play of Thomas Gillen and Colin McLaughlin, who Turner said controlled the offensive tempo and provided multiple assists.
