Game On: York’s Harvell, Lafayette’s Fitchett Reach 1,000-Point Plateau

Bay Rivers boys basketball standouts Brandon Harvell of York and Lafayette’s John Fitchett, both seniors, each scored the 1,000th point of their careers Wednesday night.

Entering Wednesday’s tilt at Jamestown, Harvell needed just 10 points to reach the milestone before finishing with a game-high 27 points in a in a 68-56 Falcons’ loss, giving him 1,017 for his career entering Friday’s home game vs. Smithfield.

Harvell, who signed a scholarship to play baseball for Longwood University next spring, said the feats ranks “pretty high” on his list of all-time athletic achievements, along with beating New Kent, the states No. 1 ranked team  at the time, in the Bay Rivers District tournament championship his freshman season.

“It was pretty special,” said Harvell, whose averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 assists and 2.3 steals this season. “It’s a great memory to take away from high school, and I still want to enjoy my senior, but I’m ready for college and to join Blake [Ream], C.J. [Roth] and Kyri [Washington] (current Longwood baseball players who were area standouts on Grafton High’s team last year) and take it to another level.”

Fitchett, who leads Lafayette in scoring at over 20 points per contest and roughly seven rebounds, accomplished the feat in just three full seasons on the Rams’ varsity team. Fitchett spent the final four games of his freshman season on the varsity bench without registering a point.

Fitchett also needed just 10 points to reach 1,000 entering Wednesday before finishing with 24, although it came in a Rams’ road loss at Smithfield.

“It means a lot that I’ll always been remembered at Lafayette along with the great players, some like Brandon [Moiler] and Art [Crew]who I played with,” Fitchett said. “It’s definitely up there [on his list of all-time achievements]. last year’s team was pretty memorable although we didn’t make it to states like we had hoped.

“I’m still hoping to do something this year that can rank even higher.”
