Jamestown Boys Win Joe Ellis Memorial Tournament
Jamestown’s boys basketball team put together back-to-back victories for the first time all season last weekend en route to capturing the Joe Ellis Memorial Tournament title hosted at Surry High.
The Eagles (5-4) defeated Surry County 71-58 on Thursday before knocking off Charles City 71-64 in Friday’s final.
Senior forward Kenneth Fields delivered an outstanding individual performance with a double-double effort each night. Fields scored 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds on Thursday before finishing with 24 and 11 on Friday to earn tournament MVP honors.
Jamestown boosted its record back over.500 at 5-4 and will return to its district schedule when it plays host to Bay Rivers foe Smithfield on Wednesday.
HRA Girls Sweep Bruton Holiday Tournament
What has been an excellent start to the season for Hampton Roads Academy’s girls basketball team continued last week after the Navigators swept their two contests at the Bruton Holiday Tournament last week.
A sound all-around effort helped HRA (7-1) edge Warwick 42-40 in the final seconds before rolling past host Bruton in Friday’s final, 56-28.
In Thursday’s opener, Rachel Lia (16 points, 4 assists) hit a game-tying 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in regulation before Braysia Hicks (14 points, 8 rebounds) scored the go-ahead layup with under 10 seconds left.
In Friday’s final, the Navigators built a 19-2 lead after one quarter as they cruised to the win. Lia (21 points), Hicks (15 points), Alyssia Velez (9 points) and Brianna Spence led a balanced scoring effort.
