Sports in the Community: WISC Gymnastics to Celebrate ‘National Gymnastics Day’ with Legendary Coach, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Golf Shootout, and More

WISC gymnastics will be hosting its End of Summer Weekend Training Camp this Friday through Sunday, and program director Galina Yordanova said they’re excited to have a special guest instructor on board to help celebrate National Gymnastics Day on Saturday.

Renowned Bulgarian national coach Ilia Nedev, who is internationally recognized as an advanced vault, bars and tumbling for beam and floor coach, will help train WISC’s advanced gymnasts and participate in Saturday’s ‘Turn the World Upside Down’ event in honor of National Gymnastics Day.

The event, in which all participants must flip, cartwheel or perform any other motion in which their body turns upside down, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday. A ‘Meet the Coach’ session that is open to the public will be held from 5-6 p.m.

From 1974-1992, Nedev trained seven gymnasts who represented Bulgaria in the European Championships, World Championships and Olympic games. Among some of his greatest achievements came during the 1988 Olympics, when one of Nedev’s gymnasts placed fourth overall in floor exercises. After coming to the United States in 1991, he opened Ilia Nedev Gymnastics Center in St. Louis, Missouri which he still operates today.
