Where We Live: A new home with a blank canvas, both inside and out

CHESAPEAKE — Any painting, whether a masterpiece or an eventual yard sale special, begins as a blank canvas, allowing the artist free reign to design and create with color, shape and form.

A home can be much the same: When there’s nothing that needs to be “undone,” the homeowner is free from the start to add color and style and substance wherever she or he wants, without the need to undo someone else’s handiwork.

Take for example the newly constructed home at 826 Majestic Court in Chesapeake.

“When purchasing a new home with neutral walls, you don’t have to erase someone else’s décor,” said Georgie Frech, a realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “You start from your own tastes and create to suit your needs.”

Frech said that the home itself is a transitional ranch, meaning that the exterior looks like a traditional home, but on the inside, it’s opened up with a more modern or contemporary layout.

“People today like to be together, hence the large kitchen open to the great room, which flows into a central hallway and open dining room,” she said, adding that the layout allows lots of natural light and a feeling of the outside being brought inside, as well as an easy flow when entertaining.

The walls are painted a neutral color and the wide open spaces allow for freedom in decorating.

Outside there’s a blank canvas as well.

Missing are big old trees, bent and misshapen and planted in all the wrong places. There are no unruly hedges or shrubbery growing out of control and in need of cosmetic surgery by an expert landscaper.

“Here there’s room to be creative and to design your own concepts,” Frech said.

The lot itself is one acre, meaning plenty of blank space for creating a landscaping masterpiece. There’s room for trees — big or small — that can be placed where the homeowner wants. For those with a green thumb, there’s space to be creative as well. Whether it’s a flower garden or a vegetable garden — or both — there’s an abundance of soil.

All of that landscaping design can be done, Frech said, with still plenty of space leftover for a big addition such as a detached garage or even a swimming pool.

The 2,955-square-foot home includes four bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths and is served by Grassfield Elementary, Hickory Middle, and Grassfield High School.
