Marie Catherine (Riddick) Dammons, 77, of Newport News

Marie Catherine (Riddick) Dammons (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 77, Marie Catherine Riddick Dammons, answered the Master’s call to come home to be with the Lord.

She was born on January 20, 1949, to Harvey and Edna Riddick. She was raised in “the Colony,” where she grew up picking wild berries and enjoying fruit orchards, playing house, hopscotch, and marbles with her close cousins.

She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1967.

Marie thoroughly enjoyed a competitive game of cards. She loved playing Tonk or Deuces, and laughing and sharing good times with her beloved cousins, Joyce, Norma, and Mavis.

Marie retired from Newport News Waterworks in 2010 after years of dedicated service; she previously worked in custodial services at Riverside Hospital.

Marie was a faithful and active member of Colossian Baptist Church since August of 1959, serving lovingly in both the Senior Choir and the Priscilla Missionary Ministry. She was an avid football fan who often sported her Dallas Cowboys attire. She knew the players by name and would not miss any of their televised games. Her local favorite baseball team was the Colony Yellow Jackets. She went to every game between the Colony Yellow Jackets and the York Stars because of the fierce competition that was about to take place.

Her memory will forever live on through her husband Glenn Dammons; daughter Erika Dammons Graves (Leon); special cousins, Vernell Williams and Mavis Riddick Dixon; and a host of extended family and lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings: Marshall, Jimmy, Cornelius, Israel, Delilah, Viola, Christine, Zillah, and Irene; and a good friend, Janie Dillard.

Marie’s life was a testament to the power of faith, the joy of family, and the beauty of a simple, well-lived life. Her bright spirit, sweet song, and enduring kindness will remain forever in our hearts.

Marie has fought the good fight, she has finished the race, she has kept the faith. Now there is in store for her the crown of righteousness.

REST ON IN HEAVENLY PEACE!

A service to celebrate Marie’s life will be held at Noon on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Colossian Baptist Church, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m.
