Salvador Osvaldo Rodríguez Estrella, 93, of Yorktown, Virginia, passed away peacefully on 17 June 2026.Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was the son of Laureano Rodríguez and Emilia Estrella.
Fascinated by everything aviation-related from an early age, he was a Civil Air Patrol cadet, enlisted in the Puerto Rico Air National Guard while in high school and attended Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Puerto Rico.
He graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Dad went on to graduate pilot training from Reese AFB, Texas in 1956 and was assigned to Strategic Air Command (“SAC”) at Pease AFB, New Hampshire. There, he flew the B-47, his favorite jet, as a co-pilot and aircraft commander. He was then assigned to Fairchild AFB, Washington where he served as a B-52 aircraft commander and instructor pilot, deployed to Southeast Asia and flew combat missions over Vietnam. There, he also met and married his wife of 57 years, Elaine, herself a USAF lieutenant nurse.
Following this in 1968, and due to his native fluency in both Spanish and French, Dad’s career completely shifted to the (mostly) glamorous world of foreign service and diplomacy, first serving as an exchange instructor at the Academia General del Aire (Spanish Air Force Academy), where he flew the Jungmann Bücker training biplane. He then served three tours as Air Attaché in the U.S. Embassies in N’djamena, Chad, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay.
Dad retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1983, having given 27 years of honorable service. Not one to rest, he then served a full career as a military intelligence analyst with the civil service in the Washington, DC area. For Dad, life was a great, big, soaring, complicated adventure, one he relished taking with his family around him. Possessing a great intellect, he loved debating, arguing and giving advice to those around him and was also a great connoisseur of classic films.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, two sons, Richard and Stephen, his daughter-in-law, Donna, his sisters Esther and Laura, grandchildren Jackie, Jesse, Daniel, Christopher, Lourdes, Annette and Amir and great-grandchildren Paz, Pia and Harper Skye.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy, and daughter, Renata.
We will cherish those last days with him, where he professed his love of Jesus Christ, his savior, with all his family around him. Romans 10:9.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Christ The King Episcopal Church. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Rosewell Memorial Gardens, Hayes, Va.
