It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Retired Coronel José Eliseo Rangel, a devoted family man, esteemed military officer, and cherished community member. He passed away peacefully on his 104th birthday, June 14, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia. José was born on June 14, 1922, in Venezuela, and lived a life marked by dedication, courage, and unwavering principles.

José proudly served as a Coronel in the Venezuelan Army, where he distinguished himself as a staunch defender of democracy during the tumultuous 1960s. His commitment to justice and freedom was not confined to defeating a fascist regime; following his military career, José practiced as an attorney, continuing his advocacy for the rule of law in Venezuela.

A man of diverse talents and interests, José was an avid swimmer and runner, a talented mandolin player, and a dedicated student of the Bible. His competitive spirit shone brightly when he represented Venezuela in the 1954 Pan American Games as a marksman.

José’s faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a devoted member of St. Jerome Church in Newport News, Virginia, where he found a welcoming spiritual home.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Alejandro and Josefa Rangel, and his loving daughter-in-law, Milagros Rangel. José leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, survived by his devoted wife, Betty J. Rangel, his sons Edgar Rangel (Fanny) and Alejandro Rangel (Jeanneth), and his daughters Elsy Blanco (Werther), Betty Chapman (Mark), and Ingrid Ortiz (Walter). He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, each enriched by his wisdom and kindness.

A Memorial Mass to honor José’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, June 25, at 11:00 AM at St. Jerome’s Church. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose life was a testament to faith, perseverance, and love.

José Eliseo Rangel will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of his family and friends and in the principles for which he stood.
