John Michael Hoer passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, surrounded by the same close-knit family who had been the center of his life from the very beginning.
Born in St. Louis, in 1952, Johnny was the third of nine children born to Joseph Martin Hoer, Sr and Lillian Eleanor Barnard Hoer. Growing up in a house where quiet was neither expected nor achieved, Johnny learned early how to hold his own, share what he had, and occasionally steal a brother’s blanket or pillow.
John remained deeply connected to all eight of his siblings throughout his life, a bond that only strengthened with time. Uncle Johnny’s generosity was legendary among his nieces and nephews, who were the lucky recipients of many thoughtful gifts and unexpected treasures, usually delivered wrapped in newspaper.
John had a lifelong passion for cars, a love that went beyond a hobby and into something closer to art. He had many friends (and sometimes purchase competitors) within the classic car community. His prized possession—a 1969 Yenko Camaro—was not just a car; it was a masterpiece and a conversation starter. If you knew John, you know about his latest car rescue (yes, that one)! You might even have seen pictures.
Johnny will be remembered for his good humor, his generosity, and his unwavering devotion to his family. He is predeceased by his parents and siblings Joseph Martin, Jr and Jane Marie. He is survived by his siblings: Joan Margaret, James Mathew, Jerome Mark, Jeffery Marcus, Janet Marlene and Jean Maureen; as well as his many nieces and nephews, who will carry forward his stories and his spirit.
In true Johnny fashion, we imagine him now somewhere on an open road, with a perfectly tuned engine, on the way to his next great find. In his memory, the family asks that you take a drive with a friend in a car you love.
Please join us as we honor his memory in a celebration of life on Monday, July 13, from 3-5 p.m., at the Hornsby House Inn, 702 Main Street, Yorktown.
