Virginia “Ginger” Pound Dewhirst, 86, of Williamsburg, Virginia passed at home with family by her side on May 29, 2026.
She was born March 4, 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia. Ginger was preceded in death by her mother, Dell Dena Gentry; father, Linton Watkins Pound; and son, Matthew Lee Dewhirst (Matt – 09/21/2017).
After attending Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia and George Washington University in Washington DC, Ginger was a teacher until she became a stay-at-home mom, and then she worked as a reservation agent for Piedmont Airlines and U.S Airways.
Ginger was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Williamsburg and a longtime supporter of Shrine Mont Episcopal Retreat Center in Orkney Springs, Virginia.
She enjoyed traveling, especially going on various cruises, spending time at the beach, and seeing the beautiful sunsets. Ginger shared many special times with her husband, John. Family time at her beach house on the Chesapeake Bay, at Shrine Mont and Fairy Stone State Park were also very special memories for her. She loved Christmas and special occasions with her children, grandchildren, and many close friends. When she was not with family, Ginger was passionate about working with children and young people, particularly disabled or challenged folks.
Ginger is survived by her husband, John W. Dewhirst; sons, John W. “Skip” Dewhirst Jr. (Lizabeth Moniz) and Jeffrey C. Dewhirst (Aimee Sullivan); daughters, Kathy D. Wincheski (Buzz Wincheski) and Suzanne W. Dewhirst; grandchildren, Clara Michelle Wincheski, Louis Daniel Wincheski, Violet Ocean Dewhirst, Miles Lee Dewhirst, and Sophie Dell Dewhirst; siblings, Carol P. Fletcher and Robert L. Pound; beloved nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and nephews; and her grand-dog, Rain.
Services at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1333 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, Virginia and Shrine Mont, 217 Shrine Mont Cir, Orkney Springs, Virginia will be scheduled at a later date.
